Nephrotic syndrome is a nonspecific kidney disorder characterized by a number of signs of disease: proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia and edema. It is a common disease in children especially in 3-5 years old child. the mechanism of its pathogenesis is not yet clear, But it is believed be related to immune function.
At it’s early stage, the clinical manifestations is mass proteinuria, low albumin, hyperlipidemia and edema. If it’s not treated timely, it will make the disease recurrent and hard to cure the disease.
Besides, it is the main cause of Child renal failure.
Edema is one of the common symptoms and it can be found more easily than others. It occurs because the damaged kidney can not remove the excessive water and fluid. At first it is eyelid or facial edema, and then it may worsen to ascites or pleural effusion which may lead to dyspnea or other related symptoms.
The basic function of kidney is to generate urine, anything abnormal can be seen from urine. Nephrotic syndrome patients may have increased urine protein excretion, and more bubbles would be seen in their urine. So be careful when you realize your children’s urine change especially it has darker color or decreased amount. When kidneys are overloaded, urine toxin accumulates. And then symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite will occur on child. Be careful when you realize your child is under such condition.
It is very important to accept reasonable and standard treatment. Some parents may have heard nephrotic syndrome can be healed naturally, so they put all their attention to their children’s self-heal ability. Some of the parents are afraid of the side effect of hormone, so they stop using hormone after a not-long period. Once the urine routine turns negative, they think they are cured so they stop using hormone which makes the disease recurrent and worsen the health condition of their children.
Children with nephrotic syndrome should have a strict control of diet and a good rest. They should have a low sodium diet when they are suffering edema and oliguria. Otherwise it will further the process of water and sodium retention which in return will worsen the damage to kidneys. Due to the large amount of protein leakage, children with nephrotic syndrome will have a relatively low plasma protein. Therefore, a certain amount of protein, especially animal protein like milk, fish, egg, poultry or beef is needed to be added to their daily diet.
In the long course of nephrotic syndrome treatment, children are more likely to feel irritable, sad and even not willing to take treatments which is unfavorable for the treatment and prognosis. So parents should try to maintain a good relationship with their children, communicate and play with them.
